The forum is held to accelerate action and discuss policies needed and to share understanding of what governments, NGOs and enterprises can do and how technology can help to increase sustainability.

As Japan was the host country of this year’s forum, we had a pleasure to hear Prime Minister Abe’s thoughts about circular economy.

Unofficial summary of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s speech at World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF2018) in Japan: Circular economy is very important for the economy and because of limited resources, we need to put 3R into wider action (reduce, reuse, recycle). Japan has strong experience in recycling, therefore it will make 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medals 100% from recycled metals. Something that no country has done before. Japan wishes to share its experience and knowledge globally and lead the way to circular economy. For example, Japan is active gathering nearby countries to discuss marine plastic pollution and improve the situation. Hoping for good discussion at the forum and moving together towards circular economy. Thank you for your time.

The future economy is likely to be different from the current, IoT and circular economy are likely to be its major drivers. The circular economy is as much for the economy as for the environment.

New technologies like machine learning can increase efficiency, also Ai and block chain can support the process towards circular economy.

Besides innovations, strong leadership from businesses and governments, harmonious collaboration and action are needed to bring ideas to reality.

The session discussed the market for recycled materials and the implications of circular economy for international trade.

Thinking out of the box is needed. There is no exact way to reach circular economy but countries can learn from each other. Technologies suitable for one country might not fit to another.

最適な循環経済など存在しませんが、世界各国が互いに手を取り合って、より良い社会にするためには、議論し合い学び合い、将来子供達に暮らしやすい地球を残していくことが最優先である。

What can be done immediately is to involve consumers so they can make smart decisions, it can be done through the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra’s “100 ways to be smart and sustainable”.
